Office 365 Updates impact all Windows Office applications, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and more. Keeping Office 365 updated will help applications stay secure, run smoothly, and can help resolve e.g. email sync issues. Some devices will allow you to set up automatic updates, while some may require you to manually update.
Manually Updating Office 365 (recommended weekly)
1. Open any Office app, such as Word or Outlook. If using Word, open a blank document.
2. Go to File, then Account (or Office Account if you opened Outlook).
3. Under the Product Information section at the right, choose Update Options, then Update Now.
NOTE: You may need to click ‘Enable Updates’ first, as demonstrated below, if the ‘Update Now’ option right isn't available right away. After selecting ‘Enable updates’ the option ‘Update Now’ will become available. If you are prompted for an admin login after selecting ‘Enable Updates’, please reach out to for help via the Helpdesk.
4. The latest update should then download and install without any further action necessary, though you may be asked to close any open Office apps for a short while. Close the "You're up to date!" pop-up window after Office is done checking for and installing updates.
Setting up automatic Office 365 updates
Rather than applying updates regularly, you can also set Windows to include automatic updates for Office 365 when it checks for Windows updates. This may not be available on all devices.
1. Open Windows Update by choosing Start, then Settings.
2. Select Windows Update.
3. Choose Advanced options.
4. Turn on ‘Receive updates for other Microsoft products’ by moving the switch to ‘On’, as below.
NOTE: If the option is greyed out and you have note like in the screenshot above stating, “This setting isn’t available due to your organisations policy” AND the option is already on, then you do not need to do anything, as your automatic updates are already turned on. If you have this note and it is ‘Off’, please submit a ticket through the Helpdesk.
